Question about cream cheese and sour cream alternatives:
Jenny writes: I have a 2 year old son, who has been lactose intolerant since the day he was born, it is a constant battle to find kid friendley lactose free foods for him to enjoy. thanks for your site, we just stumbled across it and have found several good ideas!!! Do you have any hints for cream cheese? I have found lots of reciepes with cream cheese but avoid to make them due to my sons intolerance? are there any cream cheese that are lactose free? and how about sour cream? Also, do you have any suggestion for kid friendly lactose free foods? A trip to the grocery store can be very frustrating with a two year old that wants all the kid snacks, but can't have most because they contain milk. Thanks again for your site!
First off, you have my sympathies for having a small child with lactose intolerance. I imagine being a child with the condition is rough, especially around holidays and birthdays.
In regards to the cream cheese, I haven't tried a non-dairy alternative, though I confess that I haven't really looked. Cream cheese is one of those things I occasionally cash in the lactaid for, but of course, your 2 year old can't do that.
A quick google search sent me to this page, which lists two vegan cream cheese-like products, made by Tofutti and Kingland Soy Products.
Tofutti is a brand I have seen in the grocery stores, but usually I see either the soy ice cream products, or their sour cream (to answer your other question). Their website can be found here. However, I haven't tried any of their products yet, so I can't tell you how they compare tastewise, though your 2 year old probably won't know the difference.
As far as suggestions for kid-friendly lactose-free foods go, I will most definitely get back to this in a more detailed post. I know how frustrating shopping can be, and I am sure that you're not the only one with a question. Stay tuned.

Hi Sara,
I found your blog doing a search on coconut milk (trying to find a recipe which dilutes it for drinking or putting over cereal just for the health benefits of coconut milk). I'm not lactose intolerant but certain dairy products do irritate me occasionally like chocolate. I don't know why. Because I can eat all manner of cheeses just fine. Anyway, I used to be gluten intolerant (could not tolerate the gluten protein) for 3 years and was on a very strict gluten free diet the whole time. It really improved my health but I just had a hard time not being able to eat so many different things. I found out about this energy based/acupressure allergy elimination technique called NAET. Just wanted to share this with you because I can now eat all gluten just fine! And many other foods that were apparently triggering symptoms. It might be worth it for you to check out. Maybe it could help you, or maybe not. I don't know. However, if you're interested I'd look into the website Bioset.net which is an "upgraded" version of NAET which is easier to do. (I would have done Bioset all along if I'd known about it.)If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at citizen1ita@yahoo.com
Peace,
Juanita
If there is one dairy alternative (outside of regular milk alternatives) that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend, it's the cream cheese subs. Really, they are amazingly similar to the real thing. Even those who can taste the slight difference when used as a spread, admit that it works seemlessly in recipes. In the US, Tofutti, Follow Your Heart, and Sheese are a few that are available. I believe Galaxy discontinued. No need to bust out the Lactaid anymore for that one!
glad to hear from someone who has tried some cream cheese alternatives. I'll keep an eye for them, thanks!
I am lactose intolerant and use Better than Cream Cheese and Sour Supreme (Sour Cream sub) ALL the time. I notice very little, if any, difference from the *real* stuff. Hope this helps.
I also use the Better than Cream Cheese and Sour Supreme and have been very happy with them. The only thing I noticed is that the Sour Supreme is a little thicker than dairy sour cream.
My grocery store carries a lot of soy products but so far I've only been able to find these two at my health food store.

Nice blog! I'll be back to visit because my husband is lactose intolerant, but I am vegetarian (and wholly dependent/addicted to dairy).
The Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese is fantastic! I have used it to make blintz filling. Later today, for my husband's birthday, I'm going to make carrot cake with Tofutti frosting.
I use tofutti too! It's great.
We have just diagnosed my 7-year-old daughter with lactose intolerance. It has been more difficult than I thought it would be. I just found this web site and think it is fantastic!!
Anyhow, we have been experimenting and have found that most soy products are pretty gross. She did have the Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese on a bagel in her lunch today and thought it was pretty good!
I was wondering about the Kraft parmesan cheese in the green tube jar. I noticed that it does not contain any lactose but is it really true that other Kraft cheeses don't either?!
It really is true of the parmesan in the green tube and any of the shredded or block cheeses.
As far as the slices go, only the "Deli Slices" are lactose-free, but not the regular Kraft singles. So as far as I am aware-- I haven't checked the label in quite some time.
Just make sure to read the label and you should be fine!
And speaking of labels-- On the side bar there, I have all posts concerning cheese all grouped together.
Glad to hear you find the site helpful!
